Do you know what I like?
Food.
Food in general, but most especially food at night. Food after the sun has set. Food after dark. Food like a warm blanket on a cold night. Food in general but highly processed food with no nutritional value in particular. Crunchy salty sweet gooey food. Food your nutritionist wards off with hex signs and garlic bulbs.
Food that feels like approval, like, yes you deserve this sweet and secret thing. Come to me little girl, says the creepy man in the white van his hand full of candy. Come to me my precious, you are mine and I am yours, wrap me around you like I’m the Jewels of the Kingdom.
I looked up night eating online and found a not-small support group for NES, Night Eating Syndrome, an actual thing! People who eat compulsively at night, even waking up at 1, 2, and 3:00 in the morning to eat in the night some more. People who buy security systems to lock themselves out of the fridge. WOW, I thought. I love these people!
Most of them haven’t solved their problems or figured out the secrets of the universe, but they were so open and honest about themselves that I felt 100% less alone in their virtual company. No doubt, I will think about them tonight.
