Right now, I have moving brain.
Every day a new inspection, appraisal, electrician, painter. Boxes, boxes, boxes. And: Decisions! 1,000,000 decisions. I already have decision fatigue and it’s early yet.
What to take and what to let go? It’s not just about my stuff but my parent’s stuff, and their parent’s stuff. We even have some of the stuff Adam and Eve passed down to Cain and Able. The cold hard truth is most of it has to go. We have to downsize by half and Henry has already let us know that he plans to keep nothing of ours when we’re dead. So there’s that.
I imagine the more I release the lighter I’ll feel. I fantasize about arriving at our new house with one moderate truckload of spare and elegant necessities. That’s the dream. But for now, Goodwill and the county dump are my BFFs.
Aside from the stuff, the biggest letting go happened on Friday when Henry and I drove to Harrisonburg to sell my father’s few acres in the Shenandoah Valley.
We walked around the land before the closing and Henry and I were both surprised that I didn’t cry, how at peace I seemed. I realized the real letting go had started when my father died four years ago. This was just the snipping of the last few threads. And besides, that land had always been my dad’s dream. It’s time to follow a dream of my own.

“As always, Valley provides an atmosphere of safety to those of us have stories to tell. In my years of writing with her, I have learned to love and forgive myself, the messes I have made and the love I receive with an open heart. Thank you, Valley, who shares herself and teaches us how to be.” —Chaya
